Description

The Fiskars super splitting axe splits large and thick blocks of wood with ease. The high-quality carbon steel blade has a PTFE coating, which reduces friction and helps facilitate the removal of the blade from wood. The 4-1/2-pound axe is smartly designed and easy to use. The 28-inch handle consists of a sturdy glass fiber-reinforced polyamide and is molded around the head to prevent loosening and separation. This ax is much lighter than ones with wooden handles and less likely to break at the neck. You can use the face of the ax as a sledge with Fiskars's splitting wedge for large blocks of wood. The ax comes complete with a plastic sheath for carrying and safe storage and includes a lifetime warranty.

Customer reviews for 'Fiskars Super Splitting Axe with 28-Inch Handle and 4-1/4 Pound Head #7854'

Best splitting axe ever! Well worth the $$$

I had a fiberglass splitting maul that I bought at Home Depot for $32. It also had a 4lb head, but only lasted 2 weekends of splitting. I cracked the head and the blade was jacked. I did my research and read what everyone had to say about the Fiskars super splitting axe. I was a little concerned over the "short" handle and price tag of $50+. But it was a GREAT investment. This axe cuts like butter and doesn't get lodged in the stumps. I have split 18" rounds with ease! I am 6'0" tall and didn't have any issues swinging it since the handle is only 28". I also highly recommend the fiskars axe sharpener. I found the sharpener at a local OSH for only $8.99. But Amazon is the best place to buy the super splitting axe. Don't waste your time on eBay because they might not have it in stock even though they say they do- as I had to learn the hard way.

Fiskars Splitting Axe

This splitting axe is well worth the money that I spent on it. When I initially got it, I swung at the first few logs with my full force. I ended up splitting the log and burying the head of the axe completely in the ground. Green wood takes more effort and logs with knots in them can also take a couple of whacks to get them split, but for my purpose of providing wood for evening and weekend fireplace fires, this axe was perfect.

Excellent Firewood Splitter

Dubious at first, I found the short (28") hollow synthetic handle to give good control and little or no contact 'shock' feedback to my hands and joints. The wedge design splits well, although the Fiskar is enough heavier than my antique 3 1/2 lb. single-bit axe that I am aware of the difference after an hour or so. After more than forty years of hand splitting with long-handled mauls and axes, I may have found my ideal splitting pardner!
Tips: Use a chopping/splitting block, esp. if you're six foot or taller w/ long arms; Don't use a "Gonzo' power swing, you'll find a smooth overhand swing gives better control and accuracy; Position your body squarely with feet well apart for balance; And don't have anything within ten or twelve feet of your chopping block that is easily dented!
For comparisons, I am splitting 12" to 16" green hickory (straight grain), seasoned oak, walnut, and various 'trash' wood of smaller sizes. Log lengths are 12" to 16", cut to accomodate my particular stove and arthritic joints.
