Description

Ahh, baby has finally fallen asleep. Time to do the dishes/eat dinner/go to sleep…but wait! Is that the baby waking up? Is she coughing? Is she breathing?

Every new parent (and one or two veteran ones, too) knows this scenario. It’s lovely when your baby sleeps, but it sure would be nice to keep an eye on her, too. But there aren’t too many parents around who have the luxury of sitting quietly in baby’s bedroom, watching her sleep. This is why baby monitors were invented. And traditional audio monitors are a terrific boon to modern parents. But the Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor—now here is technology at its finest!

Turn On, Tune In, and Stay Out of Baby’s Room
With this slick little monitor, not only can you hear your little angel’s every breath and snuffle and rustle, but you can see her every move, too! From anywhere in the house, no less! Sound lights visually show baby’s level of activity, while nighttime LED lights on the camera make the baby fully visible day and night. Simply push one button on the parent unit to take a peek, then push the same button when you’re reassured enough to rely on the sound lights for a while. With a 350-foot range, you can carry the monitor receiver everywhere you go, even into the yard. And, most importantly, you won’t be tempted to poke your head in through that creaky bedroom door you keep meaning to fix just for a quick look at your little tot—which inevitably results in her waking and needing to go through the whole bedtime rigmarole again.

Techy Details
The 1.8-inch screen is plenty big enough to see what you need to see: your little darling’s slumbering form in full color (during daylight hours) or black-and-white (the automatic nighttime view). The parent unit includes 900 MHz technology for superior clarity of sound. If static occurs, switch channels on the two-channel selection to minimize interference. Two power options—rechargeable battery or A/C—provide parents with the freedom to roam or stay put. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 10 hours, making it a good choice for travel. The parent unit also includes an audio/video output jack and is headphone-ready (headphones not included). Brightness control and volume control features allow parents to tone it down or turn it up when necessary. Screen automatically "times out" to save batteries. "Power on" indicator lets parents know, well, when the unit’s on! Baby’s unit includes A/C-powered camera, nighttime LED lights for viewing baby in a darkened room, self-filtering directional microphone, two-channel selection to minimize interference, and "power on" indicator.

And You Put It…?
Baby’s unit provides tabletop or wall-mounted options. A belt clip and stand on the parent unit allows complete portability, while an anchor and security clips (6 included) enables parent to mount the receiver on the wall. --Emilie Coulter

Customer reviews for 'Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor 1.8" Screen White'

The best monitor

We did a lot of reviews on monitors. This one is fabulous. It gives me the peace of mind throughout the night. My son makes a lot of noise in his sleep. This allows me to hear him but check the screen to see if he is awake to eat or if he is just making noise in his sleep. I love this product.

It does get interference like most products that are wireless etc. I find that if you it is plugged in and you get interference, wiggle the connection a little and it stops. It is just in a bad position. If it is not plugged in, just move it to another spot and it will stop. It is not bad at all. You will not find a monitor that does not get interference because of the waves that are required to make it work. This product is worth ever cent.

Don't buy if you stay in an apartment complex

When I received the product and opened it to set it up, I was quite happy with the build quality and the overall finish of this device. I powered on the camera and then the hand-held monitor and I was amazed that it indeed had a very nice image of the crib area you point it at.

Then I powered OFF the camera and kept the hand-held monitor powered ON. Thats when I saw someone else's baby in his/her crib. The device comes with 2 channels, so I flipped from one channel to the other and to my surprise there was someone else's baby on the other channel. You can even listen to what the people around the transmitter are talking about. Since the transmitter uses 900Mhz signal to transmit the information over the air, and only has 2 channels, if you stay in a apartment complex or a highly populated area where houses are close-by, there is a chance that someone else might have this item and they can watch/hear what your camera transmits and vice versa.

When you power on your own camera, the signal from your camera is the strongest and hence you will only see your baby in your monitor. But if you want privacy and do not want your neighbors to know what you are talking about and what your baby is doing, better stay away from this monitor.

This Summer handheld video monitor is better than the Graco handheld video monitor

I bought both the Graco hand-held color video monitor and the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color video hand-held monitor 1.8". I had to test each one alone (not both running at the same time, because they interfered with each other's reception). The Summer worked better as described below: They booth worked pretty well, but the Graco was not really showing the color, even in broad daylight next to a sunny window with bright colors on my test subject (my husband), whereas the Summer had great color. Also I asked him to take some deep breaths: Graco didn't show the movement in his chest, but the Summer monitor did. I walked across our house, out the garage, down the driveway, across the street, and into our neighbor's driveway with each hand-held monitor. The Graco lost reception at the garage door of our house (about half a soccer field length away). The Summer still had reception at our neighbor's drive way (about one soccer field away from the video monitor). We have wireless internet and 5.8 GHz phones and had no interception problems with either monitor. I would not have been unsatisfied with the Graco, but the Summer was much better. I didn't give the Summer a 5 star rating because always, even in the room just below the video monitor, the sound quality was like white noise, rather than quiet, AND because occasionally there is a split second "blip" of the screen, but not often. I gave the Graco a 3 star rating and the Summer a 4 star rating. I was content with either one, but much preferred the Summer (though it too was not perfect).
Note: our house is new and has lots of wires in the walls. My friend brought her video monitor over to try (one that she loves in her much older but also quite big house) and I had absolutely no reception with it, even in the room just below the monitor. So, I think my house has lots of obstacles to get through, for these monitors, and it's a 5K sq. ft. house. Her video monitor has no name brand on it anywhere, so we don't know what brand it is, but it's about 4 years old in Nov. 2008.
